💎 Another Hidden Gem 💎
There are few things better than discovering a cracking red, and this week, we’ve gone offshore for our latest find. Straight from the sun-drenched island of Sicily, this Nero d'Avola has made its way into our glasses - and let’s just say, we’ll be making room for a few more bottles.
This one came highly recommended, and we’re very glad the tip-off came through because it’s an absolute belter.

A Sicilian Secret 💎
🍷 Colpasso Nero d'Avola (2022)
Sicily: home of Mount Etna, cannoli, and more importantly, some seriously underrated wines. The Colpasso Nero d'Avola (2022) is proof that you don’t need to drop big dollars to get something fantastic in your glass.
After cracking this bottle, we’re suddenly transported to a seaside villa, sipping wine while an old Italian nonna force-feeds us homemade pasta. And isn't that what finding hidden gems is all about?
Reading up on this little beauty, the secret to this wine is in the grapes and the wizardry behind them. Half of the fruit is treated like royalty - carefully picked and transported without so much as a bruise. The bunches then get a little holiday, laid out to dry for 30 days like sunbathers on Bondi. Once they’re nice and shrivelled, they’re crushed and blended back with the regular juice, creating a wine that’s richer, deeper, and far more interesting than your mate who just got back from a "life-changing" trip to Europe.
The label gives off a bit of an old-school Euro vibe - kind of like the dated tiles you see in hotels that haven’t been renovated since the ‘80s. That said, it somehow works and further helps the illusion of being in Sicily, feet up, glass in hand, pretending we’re living our best Mediterranean life.
Similiar to a Cab Sauv it’s got that deep, dark, full-bodied flavour that pairs perfectly with an Italian feast. Fire up the stove, whack on some pasta, or get fancy with a lamb cutlet - this bottle will make your meal feel like a five-star trattoria.
It’s one of the best reds we’ve found in a while at this price, and you won’t regret snapping up a bottle (or three) before the current Dan's member deal disappears. Currently it's $13 but normally $15.99.
Trust us, this is one recommendation you’ll be glad you followed.
VITR Official Score: 8.5 / 10
👍 Reality vs Perception: At $13, you’d expect "decent," but this is next-level good. A proper overachiever and would absolutely pass off as a $30 bottle.
👩🎨 Label Aesthetics: Dated hotel tiles, but with charm. You kind of love it, even if you don’t know why.
👴 Comparison to Nonno’s Home Brew: Nonno would nod in approval, pour himself a glass, and tell you a long-winded story about the old country.
🪩 Fit for an Engagement Party: We think so. A budget-friendly crowd-pleaser that pairs with everything and is a little more unique than a traditional Cab Sauv or Pinot.
🤑 Keep the Change: At $13, you might just have enough for some cannoli from your local pasticceria. Do it!

📖 Fake It 'Til You Make It
Super Tuscan: Not a Marvel character, but a blend of Italian and non-traditional grapes that breaks the rules.

🍿 Sip & Snack
Sparkling Red & Mars Bar Pods: A chilled sparkling red brings a touch of fizz to cut through the sweet, chocolatey richness. Think of it as a grown-up chocolate milkshake moment.
